Baby Carrier Mastery: 3 Simple Rules for Safe Wearing in Hong Kong

Being mobile with your little one is such a treat and such a nice thing to do—but if you want your little one comfortable in their carrier and both your spines aligned, there are some golden rules to master. Ready? Let's go.

3 Golden Rules for Ergonomic Baby Wearing

Golden Rule What to Check How to Adjust
Rule 1: The Kiss Test Baby is perched high enough that you can easily kiss the top of their head without bending down like tying your shoes. Adjust back straps about 1/3 from the top of your shoulders, snug in side straps, and tighten hip support.
Rule 2: Natural Hip Angle Baby's legs are at a natural ~45° angle, avoiding an extreme 90° horizontal split. Tighten the middle crotch section of the carrier to support a comfortable M-position.
Rule 3: Straight Spine, Centered Head Baby is centered with chin tucked down, spine gently rounded forward, and head upright without arching. Gently reposition their whole body to be symmetrical and grounded if tilting or arching occurs.

Breakdown of the 3 Golden Carrier Rules

Rule 1: The Kiss Test

Your baby should be perched up high enough that you can plant a sneaky top-head kiss whenever the mood strikes. If you're bending down like you're trying to tie your shoes, something's off.

The fix? Adjust those back straps up about ⅓ from the top of your shoulders, snug in the side straps a bit (they shouldn't be flapping in the wind), and tighten the hip support so it sits securely on your hips.

Rule 2: Your Baby Isn't Doing the Splits

Just because your baby can do an extreme horizontal leg spread doesn't mean they should. A wide-leg position might look flexible, but holding those legs in a split out for hours is not a good thing.

Tighten up the middle crotch section of the carrier to bring those baby legs into a natural, comfortable position. Think more 45-degree hip angle for your little one instead of 90 degrees!

Rule 3: Straight Spine, Centered Head

Your baby should look centered, calm, and ready for the walk—not like they're attempting an advanced backbend. Keep that chin tucked down, spine gently rounded forward, and head nice and centered.

Catch yourself noticing the baby's head tilting back or arching? Gently reposition their whole body to be more symmetrical and grounded.
