Postpartum Care in Hong Kong: A Women's Health Physio's Guide
Written by Julia Lee, Women’s & Pelvic Health Physiotherapist at The Round Clinic
Preparing for birth is a monumental milestone. While much of the focus naturally lands on baby gear, nursery decor, and the labour itself, what happens after birth requires just as much preparation.
As a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, my mission is to ensure you feel strong, supported, and comfortable during your postpartum recovery.
The physical toll of both vaginal and caesarean deliveries on your pelvic floor and core is significant. Tissue stretching, swelling, micro-tears, or surgical incisions all require dedicated care. Packing the right items in your hospital bag can completely transform your early recovery days from painful and stressful to manageable and comfortable.
Here is a Physio-approved CHECKLIST of the 6 recovery essentials you need to pack, why they matter for your anatomy, and how to use them effectively.
1. High-Absorbency Maternity Pads
Postpartum bleeding, known as lochia, is heavy, continuous, and can last for several weeks as your uterus sheds its lining after birth.
Standard menstrual pads are not designed to handle this high volume or provide the physical cushioning your tender perineum needs.
Specialized choices like Abena Maternity Pads are extra-long and highly absorbent with leak protection barriers. From a pelvic health perspective, they provide a thick layer of soft padding that shields your perineal stitches and inflamed tissues from friction, making sitting up or shifting positions in your hospital bed significantly more tolerable.
2. Seamless Disposable Underwear
Traditional underwear can cause major discomfort after giving birth because standard waistbands dig into fresh caesarean incisions and tight leg openings rub against a swollen vulva.
Swapping to Frida Mom Postpartum Disposable Underwear is a recovery game-changer. These seamless, microfiber boy-shorts are incredibly stretchy and designed to hold large maternity pads securely in place without bunching or causing friction. Additionally, the high-waisted cut stretches comfortably over your postpartum belly, ensuring no tight elastic presses against your sensitive lower abdomen.
3. The Upside-Down Peri-Bottle
Urination after a vaginal birth often causes a sharp, stinging sensation when urine contacts micro-tears, and wiping with dry toilet paper can easily disrupt delicate healing sutures.
The Frida Mom Upside-Down Peri-Bottle features a narrow, angled neck that sprays upward so you do not have to awkwardly angle your hand inside the toilet bowl. Filling it with warm water to spray your perineum while you urinate dilutes the acid to prevent stinging. You can then use it to gently rinse the area clean before patting dry with a clean cloth. If you have a C-section, keeping your highly sensitive incision clean, dry, and protected from friction is your top recovery priority.
4. Target-Specific Hot and Cold Packs
Inflammation and throbbing are incredibly common in the first 48 hours following a vaginal delivery, and your pelvic floor benefits immensely from targeted cold therapy to reduce swelling and numb nerve pain.
The Lansinoh Cold & Warm Post-Birth Relief Pad is a slim gel pack that fits directly inside your maternity underwear to safely ease localized vulvar pain when frozen. Later in your recovery, this same pack can be warmed up to soothe uterine involution cramping or relieve lower back tension, provided you always use the included soft sleeve to protect your skin.
5. Specialized C-Section Briefs
Birth can be unpredictable, and packing items that accommodate a caesarean birth ensures you are never caught off guard if your delivery plan changes.
Cantaloop C-Section Briefs are engineered specifically for surgical recovery with a reinforced zone that provides light, stabilizing compression to the incision site. This gentle pressure reduces localized swelling, protects the wound from rubbing against clothes, and utilizes breathable fabric to promote healing air circulation.
6. Light Abdominal Support Belts
During pregnancy, your abdominal muscles stretch extensively and the central connective tissue softens, which often leaves your core feeling completely empty, unstable, and weak immediately after birth. This lack of structural support can cause women to strain their lower back muscles when lifting their baby or getting out of bed.
Packing a light compression band like the Cantaloop Shaping Belt provides your torso with immediate stability and tactile feedback. It acts as a temporary external set of core muscles, helping you maintain better posture while breastfeeding and reducing the downward pressure forced onto your healing pelvic floor.
