Can’t find enough “me” time to exercise? You don’t have to exercise alone. Childhood obesity is one of our nation’s most devastating health problems. So, include your baby or toddler in your exercise routine with these actives and set a great example.
Under 6 months – Before they can crawl babies need tummy time to build upper body strength. Lay your infant on a blanket beside you and while they are doing their tiny push-ups you can do old favorites like leg lifts and crunches or yoga poses like: The Cobra - Lay on your stomach and put your hands on the floor near your face with your elbows close to your body. While leaving your legs on the floor, straighten your arms. Make eye contact with your baby during the floor routine and your 15 minutes work out becomes bonding time as well.
6 months to 1 –Lay on your back, feet flat, knees forming a triangle, put your baby on your belly and play peek–a-boo. Lift your upper body several inches off the ground and see how long you can hold on. In this position, you can also do the boat pose. Hold under your knees and extend your legs up until your body is at a 45-degree angle, (your body should form a V). Now let go of your knees, straighten your arms and open your palms toward the floor. Hold for 10 seconds. Your baby will love mommy time and you will love your waistline.
Young Toddlers -Feeling a little stiff lately? Stretching is a great tension reliever. To stretch with your toddler, sit on the floor with your legs in a V shape, have your child do the same. Now put your feet to his feet and join hands. Gently pull back and forth while singing “Row, Row, Row your boat.” This will help with them walking skills.
Older Toddlers –Just dance. Children love music. And dancing is a great way to burn calories while being silly, as a family. There are several video games, aerobics shows and DVDs that make dancing/exercising fun for children; or play music from around the world and use family dance time as a way to learn about different cultures.
Exercising isn’t just good for your body it is also good for your family’s emotional health because physical activity helps elevate mood and reduce stress levels. So get moving.
